Christian Women at Work

Jerry Curry

As far back as my memory can accurately recall facts and events (no comments required). I have known Christian women who have been busy working in the Lord’s kingdom; spending tireless hours preparing Bible lessons for children’s and ladies’ classes, preparing meals for those in need and visiting the sick. This is done while also tending to the needs of their families. We are truly thankful for the many Christian women who follow the examples of those noted in the gospel records. Pause with me for a moment and be thankful for those we know who share these attributes and character.

Anna

“And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, and she had been a widow even unto fourscore and four years), who departed not from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day. And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks unto God, and spake of him to all them that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36-38)

Mary and Martha

“Now as they went on their way, he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving; and she came up to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister did leave me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me. But the Lord answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:38-42) We commend Martha for her gracious acts of hospitality, and Mary for her intense interest in listening to the teaching of Jesus.

Mary, John Mark’s Mother

“And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together and were praying.” (Acts 12:12) Mary had opened her home to Christians who had come together to pray.

Mary Magdalene, Joannab And Susanna

“And it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good tidings of the kingdom of God, and with him the twelve, A certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary that was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna the wife of Chuzas Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered unto them of their substance.” (Luke 8:1-3)

 Dorcas

Now there was a Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. And it came to pass in those days, that she fell sick, and died: and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper chamber. And as Lydia was nigh unto Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men unto him, entreating him, Delay not to come on unto us. And Peter arose and went with them. And when he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.” (Acts 9:36-39)

These are a few of the women noted in the New Testament for their work in the kingdom. Let us give thanks for these and also for those on our personal list that we know who are busy serving the Lord as they serve others.
