A USELESS RELIGION?

 Mike Johnson

James 1:26 says, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” (NKJV)

Do you know that it is possible for our religion to become vain? First, Jesus pointed out that it is possible for our worship (and religion) to be vain if we teach the doctrine and commandments of men (Mt. 15:8-9).  Second, even if we believe the right doctrine, worship correctly, and teach the right precepts, our religion can be made “useless” (vain) by a failure to bridle (to exercise the control over) our tongues. A person could attend every service, sing praises to God, partake of the Lord’s Supper, and give of his means every Sunday.  He may know the truth about baptism, instrumental music, and he may fully understand what the Bible teaches about divorce and remarriage.  But, if he cannot control his tongue, he will be lost.  James 3:8 says that the tongue is an unruly evil full of deadly poison;  Proverbs 21:2 points out, “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.”  We must control our tongues!
